Grand River and St. Mary’s General hospitals enter negotiations to secure land for new hospital in Kitchener-Waterloo

Grand River Hospital and St. Mary’s General Hospital are pleased to share an update on the process to find a location for a new hospital in Kitchener-Waterloo.
Following the process to identify a site for the new hospital, the Site Selection Panel leading this work delivered its recommendation on two locations which were approved by the boards of Grand River Hospital, St. Mary’s General Hospital, and St. Joseph’s Health System in April.
The hospitals are now in the negotiation process to secure land for the new hospital, which includes completing due diligence and discussions with the landowners of both sites. To ensure a fair negotiation process, the site locations and landowners will not be shared until land has been secured. It is expected negotiations may occur over several months.
The recommended sites were identified through the evaluation of the three shortlisted proposals announced in December last year. Submissions were reviewed by a group of technical experts including environmental experts, planning professionals, lawyers, engineers, and Indigenous community members. All three sites were then ranked by individual Site Selection Panel members with a total score provided for each site. The two sites with the highest scores were put forward as the recommended sites.
The hospitals would like to thank the Site Selection Panel for their efforts in this process over the last year and look forward to sharing further updates on the site selection process following the completion of the negotiation process later in 2024.
