Our New Hospital Site
A new acute care hospital is a key part of our proposal to build the future of care for Waterloo Region and beyond.
In July 2024 we announced that the David Johnston Research + Technology Park (R&T Park) at the University of Waterloo will be the location of our new acute care hospital.
This location will allow us to deepen our partnership with the University of Waterloo to bring education, research and innovation closer to health care delivery.
Through this process we heard from over 12,000 community members to determine the site criteria. In addition to the provincially mandated criteria, including that the site needed to be at least 50 acres, we heard that our new site needed to:
- Be near major highways and accessible by transit.
- Contribute to our goal of building stronger and healthier communities, including through access to nature.
- Be in close proximity to amenities that would enhance patient and team member experiences, such as being near business, partners and schools.
The full list of criteria used to identify and evaluate sites can be found here.
The University of Waterloo’s David Johnston Research + Technology Park meets and exceeds these criteria.
